In this collaborative study with Dr Ian Duncan’s lab and Dr James N Verhoeve, published by PNAS in December, 2019, it is confirmed that delays in visual evoked potentials can be used as an indirect measure of healing (remyelination) of the insulating myelin sheath that surrounds optic nerve fibers. Our combined results validate use of this test (measuring electrical activity in the brain via the overlying scalp in response to flashes or patterns of light), as an outcomes measure in clinical trials of new treatment strategies for patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), a debilitating disease that frequently involves the optic nerves.
